Story telling is a way to define, make meaning and construct the self and we are three story tellers who believe that this is as important for people with dementia as it is for any of us.  Despite this we know that social isolation is both a risk factor and a symptom of worsening dementia.  We wanted to explore if people with dementia would enjoy a story telling group and to record those stories in a beautiful way that they could keep for the uncertainties in the future.  We asked people to bring an object that has been in their poss

A Systematic Review of the Public’s Knowledge and Understanding of Alzheimer’s Disease and Dementia.

Project Aim(s): This paper reports findings from a systematic review of the literature on the general public’s knowledge and understanding of dementia/Alzheimer’s disease. The key purpose of the review was to evaluate existing literature with specific attention paid to conceptual and methodological issues and to key findings. Over a 20-year period, 40 published articles satisfied the inclusion criteria. Only 4 of these were qualitative and 5 were cross-national.

Living and dying with Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis: A Population based Analysis of Palliative Needs, Services and Outcomes in non-malignant terminal illness.

Project Aim(s): This project aimed to utilize data from the Irish Register and the national ALS service to generate a framework for care for Irish ALS patients based on their clinical phenotype,  rate of progression and long term prognosis.  The objective was to design, estimate the costs, and measure the benefits of a multifaceted care programme that incorporates the key clinical and prognostic elements of ALS.
