View full profile

Darragh O’Brien is a Group Leader in Translational Proteomics and Neurodegenerative Disease at the Nuffield Department of Medicine, University of Oxford, where he utilises biological mass spectrometry to decipher mechanisms of human disease. His research interests lie in how protein intrinsic disorder and post-translational modifications such as phosphorylation and ubiquitination contribute to protein function and disease, with a focus on the tauopathies Alzheimer's Disease and Progressive Supranuclear Palsy.

Dr O’Brien’s scientific journey began with an Honors Degree in Biochemistry from University College Dublin in 2004, where his undergraduate thesis explored mechanisms of amyloid processing in AD, under the guidance of Professor Dominic Walsh. Dr O'Brien subsequently undertook PhD studies in Neuroscience in the group of Professor Sir Simon Lovestone at the Institute of Psychiatry, Psychology & Neuroscience (IoPPN), King’s College London. This was followed by research positions at University College London and Institut Pasteur in Paris. Darragh is a Research Fellow of Green Templeton College, University of Oxford.

Trasna na dTonnta network

Trasna na dTonnta is DRNI’s network for the Irish dementia research diaspora – a network for Irish researchers based abroad who want to keep in touch with research happening on the island of Ireland, or wish to connect to other Irish researchers based overseas.

Our aims with the network are to strengthen links between Irish dementia researchers at home and abroad; to support Irish dementia researchers emigrating to new countries and those returning home; and to strengthen Irish dementia research by supporting international collaborations.

If you would like to join this network, please contact Vanessa Moore: info@dementianetwork.ie
