Project Aim(s): To provide new estimates of dementia prevalence at a national and local level in Ireland and new projections of future numbers of people with dementia.
PMSMatTrain focuses on gaining a comprehensive understanding of the progressive phase of multiple sclerosis (PMS) from basics to translation, fully supported by eight beneficiaries (six research institutions and two SMEs).
Project Aim(s): To understand the genetic basis of ALS and to ultimately find a cure for this devastating, fatal neuromuscular disease, Project MinE aims to analyse the DNA of at least 15,000 ALS patients and 7,500 control subjects. The resulting 22,500 DNA profiles will be compared.
The PROtein enriched MEDiterranean Diet and EXercise (PROMED-EX) randomised controlled trial (RCT) aims to determine the efficacy of a protein-enriched Mediterranean diet, with and without exercise, in comparison with standard care, on nutritional status and cognition in adults at risk of undernutrition with subjective cognitive decline. The project will explore the mechanistic pathways in diet-exercise induced change in nutritional status and cognition.
The overall aim of this research is to examine the effect of regular exercise on:
1) Adult hippocampal neurogenesis
2) Cognitive performance in hippocampus-dependent memory tasks
3) Microglial activation and neuroinflammatory profile using the transgenic mouse model of Alzheimer’s Disease [amyloid precursor protein (APP)SWE/presenilin-1 (PS-1)].
Project Aim(s): To develop and assess the feasibility of a theoretically-informed, evidence-based and sustainable intervention to rationalise antipsychotic prescribing in nursing home residents with dementia.
Project Aim(s): This study on dementia and home design in Ireland was undertaken to inform the development of Universal Design Guidelines for Dementia Friendly Dwellings produced by the Centre for Excellence in Universal Design at the National Disability Authority in 2015. The study included an extensive scoping review of the literature, stakeholder engagement, and case studies of dwellings designed for people with dementia.
Resource allocation decision-making in dementia in Ireland is often characterised as being narrow, implicit and provider-driven, with little knowledge about how priorities are set and addressed, and to what effect. The absence of people with dementia from the decision-making process does much to undermine personhood and citizenship within dementia in Ireland.
Project Aim(s): To explore the perspectives of multiple stakeholders on respite services for dementia, with a view to informing service development in the Irish context.
